Staff Software Engineer, Autonomy Evaluation at Nuro

Full time

Created at Dec 03, 2024

Who We Are

Nuro exists to better everyday life through robotics. Founded in 2016, Nuro is a leading autonomous technology company with vehicles on road today in California and Texas. The company’s core technology is the Nuro Driver, an integrated autonomous driving system consisting of state-of-the-art, AI-first software and custom-built sense and compute hardware. The first commercial application of the Nuro Driver is autonomous goods delivery with our custom, electric, zero-occupant vehicles in partnership with some of the most recognized brands in the world including Uber and FedEx.

About the Role

The Autonomy Evaluation team works closely with the Autonomy Machine Learning (ML) teams to build a comprehensive and interpretable set of simulation-driven test suites for Autonomy algorithms. These test suites inform development for all components of our ML-first stack: perception, prediction, and planning.

This role can have any of the following forms (or the combination of any subset):

  • High-output Generalist working across infrastructure, frontend, and metrics development. Such a role would develop Robotics/Statistics and/or Data Pipeline domain knowledge over time to eventually also perform the functions below.
  • Robotics or Statistics Expert working closely with the ML teams to develop targeted evaluation algorithms powered by classical robotics (e.g. 3D geometry or prediction algorithms), ML techniques (e.g. reward modeling), or statistical methods (e.g. hypothesis testing).
  • Data Pipeline Expert working on the data pipelines that enable large scale data transformations for high velocity and robust simulation and metric computation.

About the Work

  • Implement simulation-powered data pipelines to continuously measure autonomy performance and data coverage against safety validation requirements.
  • Use classical robotics or ML algorithms to evaluate the performance of different components of the onboard Autonomy system.
  • Develop user interfaces, user workflows, and data visualizations used by Machine Learning and Robotics engineers for day-day development.
  • Work cross-functionally with Autonomy and Infrastructure engineers to set the technical roadmap that will continuously improve and unify the evaluation frameworks owned by our team.

About You

  • 4+ years of software engineering experience with Python coding proficiency.
  • Strong algorithmic ability and evidence of independent problem-solving.
  • Proven ability to lead technical projects from design to completion.
  • Strong communication skills so that you can effectively drive cross-functional collaboration.
  • A mindset of pushing through roadblocks and working as hard as it takes to get things done.

Bonus Points

  • Experience developing evaluation tools, evaluation metrics, or statistical algorithms.
  • Expertise working on robotics systems.
  • Experience iterating on product vision together with Product Managers and leadership
